Connors campaigns on 'fiscal responsibility' CUMBERLAND - Sen. Daniel P. Connors, Democratic incumbent in District 19, said this week, "I'm campaigning on my record on the issues and my record of fighting for change. In this time of economic uncertainty, government must be fiscally responsible - holding the line on taxes and on spending." He continued, "To hold the line on taxes," Connors explained, "I voted to cut the marginal income tax rate, create a flat tax option, phase out capital gains tax, phase out the auto tax and cap municipal property tax. Supporting these bills demonstrate my commitment to reducing each person's tax burden." Connors went on, "To hold the line on spending, I made tough budget decisions - including cutting spending - in an effort to close the deficit." To monitor spending, Connors says he "successfully advocated for strong government oversight." For example, Connors noted, "I sponsored the bill establishing the government oversight committee. This past term, I won passage of a bill that opens up Rhode Island's leases to public scrutiny. Vigorous oversight is essential to ensure that tax dollars are spent responsibly."
